Step-by-step help for setting up and running dual enrollment.

Abandon a registration

Who this is for

College Administrator

Some registrations are never going to finish: the student changed their mind, the section was cancelled, or the record was created twice. Abandoning the workflow closes it out and takes it off everyone's list, and it can be reversed if you abandon one by mistake.

Before you start

  • Abandoning is for a registration that should not proceed: the student changed their mind, the section was cancelled, or the request was made in error. If the enrollment actually happened somewhere else and just needs marking done, use Force complete a workflow instead.
  • The registration must still be open. You cannot abandon one that is already complete or already abandoned.
  • Once the student is enrolled, abandoning is blocked unless your college has been opted in to allow it. The same applies while the registration is actively exchanging data with your student information system (SIS). If you need this at your college, ask your DualEnroll representative.
  • A Workflow Action Policy can also block abandoning. When one does, the option appears disabled and no reason is shown beside it. See Why is Force Complete greyed out?.

Steps

Warning: Abandoning closes whatever step was waiting, and it can email the student, the high school counselor, and your college staff. Which of those go out depends on your college's notification settings, so at some colleges nobody is notified. Confirm with the student or the high school before you abandon on their behalf.

  1. On the Registrations list, find the student's registration and click the three-dot (⋯) menu on its row.
  2. Choose Abandon. If the option is greyed out or missing, see Why is Force Complete greyed out?.
  3. The Abandon Registration confirmation page opens. Enter a reason (required, up to 200 characters). It is recorded in the registration history and is the record of why this registration stopped. The confirm button stays disabled until you enter one.
  4. Click Abandon, then confirm again when your browser asks Are you sure? This action cannot be undone. Both that prompt and the page above it describe abandoning as permanent, but Unabandon is available afterwards to most college administrator roles.

What success looks like

You will see a message that the abandon has been queued. Abandoning runs in the background rather than finishing the instant you confirm, so the registration may take a moment to change state. Refresh the page if it still looks open.

Once it completes, the registration shows as Abandoned, any step that was waiting is closed, and the history records your name, your reason, and the time.

If this doesn't work

  • "Registration is no longer abandonable." Something changed between opening the menu and confirming, most often the student became enrolled, or the registration started exchanging data with your SIS. Reload the registration to see its current state.
  • The option is greyed out. Either a Workflow Action Policy is blocking it, or the registration is past the point where your college allows abandoning. The reason is not shown beside the option, so see Why is Force Complete greyed out? to work out which.
  • You abandoned the wrong registration. Abandoning can usually be reversed: choose Unabandon from the same menu. Not every role that can abandon can also unabandon, so if the option is not there, ask a colleague with a broader administrator role or contact the DualEnroll Help Desk.
  • Nothing seems to have happened. Because the abandon is queued, a slow queue looks like a failed action. Give it a moment and refresh before trying again. Abandoning twice is not harmful, but it will not speed it up.
